ABOUT THE MUSIC:
This Sunday at St. John’s our Choir sang Ispiciwin, a work by Cree composer Andrew Balfour, whose music brings together choral traditions and Indigenous stories in a way that invites reflection, reconciliation, and hope. Earlier this Choir Season we sang a piece of Balfour's entitled Ambe, which celebrated Indigenous tradition through the use of rhythm and Ojibway Lyrics.
In June, Andrew collaborated with the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa as part of its ongoing journey toward Truth and Reconciliation. His visit marked National Indigenous History Month and the National Indigenous Day of Prayer, and included a workshop for local singers, a public event, and a special service at Christ Church Cathedral.
The events brought together people from across the city to explore how sacred music can hold both memory and healing. Through his work, Andrew continues to create space for dialogue and connection, showing how the language of music can draw us closer to truth and to one another.
